Avascular Necrosis (AVN) - The Latest Addition in the List of Post-Covid-19 Complications
AVN Cases in Covid Recovered Patients
The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic had devastating effects such as a rapid surge in cases, reduced supply of essential treatments, increased death rate, and post-covid complications such as mucormycosis, new-onset diabetes, blood clots, chronic fatigue, etc. However, lately there a new add-on to covid-related complications. Several doctors across the country have reported a sudden rise in Avascular Necrosis cases in covid-recovered patients.
What is AVN?
AVN or Avascular (no blood) Necrosis (death of cells) is the death of bone tissue due to temporary or permanent loss of blood supply to the bone.

In this condition, the ends of long bones are affected, resulting in tiny cracks that may eventually lead to a collapse of the bone. Although, AVN can occur in any bone, the hip joint is most commonly affected.
AVN Symptoms
AVN is widely reported in COVID-recovered patients. Most of the patients suffering from AVN are young adults and belong to the age group of 30-50 years. The symptoms of AVN include pain in the hip or groin pain, swelling and inflammation, joint stiffness and loss of mobility. In the initial stages, AVN usually doesn’t have symptoms.
As the disease progresses, it becomes painful. At first, it might only hurt when you put pressure on the affected bone. Then, pain may become constant. If the bone and surrounding joint collapse, you may have severe pain leading to immobility. Depending on the joint, the progression from initial stage to total bone collapse could take a few months to over a year.
What Difficulties a Person May Face in AVN? How it Affects a Patient's Normal Life?
Living with AVN can be very challenging for the patient and for people surrounding them. Patients often suffer from both physical and mental stress. It is majorly caused due to the severe and long-lasting pain, increased immobility, and high dependency on others.
Performing basic routine tasks, such as taking a shower, climbing stairs or walking, becomes difficult for the patient. They usually need support and assistance from family members and co-workers. Therefore, AVN can prove to be exhausting and take a heavy toll on their lifestyle and mental health.
Causes of AVN:
Any injury that reduces or stops the blood flow to a bone is the fundamental cause of AVN. Some of the possible causes are:
Stages of AVN: Timely Diagnosis is The Key
AVN or Avascular Necrosis is broadly categorized into four stages: Stage I, Stage II, Stage III & Stage IV. The first two stages are the early phases of AVN, and the last two stages are referred to as the mid & advanced stages.

In AVN treatment, it is relatively possible to preserve the hip joint in the initial stages, while the advanced stages call for joint replacement surgery.
