30th January 2023
Urethral stricture is a condition where urethra is affected. Urethra is an organ which is concerned with the passing of urine from the human body. Stricture refers to any restriction or interruption. Hence, urethral stricture refers to the blockage or constraint of the urination due to any kind of infection or injury within the urethral tube leading to urinary problems. Some people have complained of pain due to this condition.
The urethra is a part of urinary system whose function is to empty the bladder through urethra also known as voiding. The length of urethra is shorter in females as compared to males. There are two types of urethral strictures namely: -
1) Posterior urethral stricture – affecting the posterior region of the urethra
2) Anterior stricture – affecting the anterior region of the urethra
1) Any urethral trauma
2) Infections through sexually transmitted diseases
3) Injury through surgical tools
4) Inflammatory conditions
5) Urinary catheterization
1) Dark colored urine
2) Semen with blood
3) Reduced flow of urine
4) Spraying of the urine flow
5) Pain during urination
6) Pain in the abdomen
7) Leaking urethra
8) Urinary tract infections
9) Inflammation of the penis
10) Loss of bladder control
The diagnosis of this condition through physical examination, X-rays, ultrasound, Urethroscopy, Retrograde urethrogram
Worry not, as there are various strategies for Urethral stricture treatment such as: -
Dilation - extending out the stricture gradually
Utilizing "sounds," which are progressively larger dilators, the stricture is stretched. The tissue can also be stretched using a catheter with a specific balloon. However, constant repetition of this stretching is necessary because it is not a true cure. You might learn how to periodically insert a catheter to stop the stricture from returning if it does so too quickly. Bleeding and infection are examples of side effects. Sometimes the stretching can result in the formation of a "false passage" or second urethral channel.
Urethrotomy - using a laser or knife to slice the stricture through a scope
To cut the stricture and make space, a knife blade or laser is utilized at the end of the cystoscope. To keep the opening open and allow the wound to heal, a catheter may be inserted into the urethra. Depending on how long the stricture is, a catheter tube should be left to drain.
Open surgery - surgically removing the stricture, reconnecting it, and maybe reconstructing it using grafts
The 2 main types are Anastomotic urethroplasty and Substitution urethroplasty
Recent advances
Our medical professionals are constantly researching the best strategies to properly manage this disease. The use of Uregrow, known as Epithelial Cell Therapy, in the treatment of urethral stricture is one such new development. It is a technique that uses healthy cells to repair an afflicted organ or tissue.
We understand this is a condition where the restriction of the urine leads to infections, trouble in urination etc. Hence, regrow focuses on the regeneration of epithelial cells and works by supplying cells from the patient’s healthy tissue. This is done by extracting the healthy tissue from the buccal cells from inner cheek, culturing it and finally implanting the cultured cells at the site of the stricture in the body of the people suffering because of it.
